The design for this new home takes cues from regional farmhouses and barns typical of New England. At once familiar and modern, the seamed metal roofs and vertical and horizontal cladding ground the structure to the land. A variety of openings for windows and doors are distinctively divided into square lights to reinforce the traditional scale and contemporary application.

Sited on six acres of undisturbed land, this new family compound is designed to be a contemporary colonial-style estate. The house and auxiliary structures — a barn with an upper-story apartment and a garage — are connected via a glass passageway. Large window openings further blur the boundaries of inside and outside to maximize the views of the woodlands and Connecticut hills in the distance.

Originally built in 1941, this 14,000-square-foot farmhouse was renovated for a family of five. The integrated scope included landscaping and terracing to marry the house to the land. The interior architecture and decoration accommodates comfortable family living as well as entertaining. A gracious light-filled stair hall sets the tone, while a completely new kitchen, mudroom, and butler’s pantry provide everyday utility via detailed, thoughtful design. Custom millwork and cabinetry based on traditional forms reinforce the historic nature of the home on the interior while the painted cedar shake, local stone, and fluted Doric columns framing the entry porch ground the house in the architectural vernacular of the region.
